After establishing our five components, building strong partnerships with a variety of organizations, hiring our Executive Director and delivering a series of key products and services—from groundbreaking science, to guidance for target setting for companies and the digital platform for the Planetary Health Check, which enables people to keep track of the planet’s health in real time—it’s time to take our communications outreach to the next level. We’re enhancing our core team, which works at the heart of the Alliance, and closely with our five components, to ensure the Alliance delivers on the strategic goals of our bold new 2030 strategy. We know that robust and inspiring communications will be key to this.

Description:

The Global Commons Alliance is seeking a full-time Communications Director to develop and implement a creative communications strategy to help GCA achieve the goals laid out in its new 2030 strategy.

The ideal candidate will have a real passion for tackling the planetary emergency through a whole Earth approach, including socio-economic transformations that can benefit people from all walks of life. They will be comfortable working with complex issues across wide networks and distilling information into compelling stories that can change minds and actions. They will be open, inclusive and creative in their approaches, and determined to make a difference.

In this role, the Communications Director will be responsible for creating and implementing a compelling communications strategy, in line with the overarching strategy, that helps the Global Commons Alliance achieve its objectives.

Working across the five components of the Alliance and directly with our diverse partners, the Communications Director will unlock efficient ways of communicating with our various audiences and stakeholder groups for maximum impact towards achieving our goals. The Communications Director reports directly to the GCA Executive Director.

As a senior member of the Core Team, working closely with the leadership team of the Alliance:

  • Lead communications activities in support of GCA’s priorities and initiatives, meeting targets defined in the approved GCA strategy.
  • Ensure consistent communications, messaging, and positioning of the GCA across the Alliance as well as with external stakeholders.

Primary responsibilities:

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Creating and helping to implement a new, highly collaborative communications strategy that supports GCA’s strategic objectives.
  • Strengthening the Global Commons Alliance’s position as a key contributor to systems change by strategically amplifying, and advocating for our work, seeking key moments for our spokespeople to engage.
  • Supporting the whole Alliance with a shared narrative, compelling key messages and other communications products that can flex for different audiences and moments and providing media training where appropriate.
  • Building strong relationships with the communications directors, leads and other communications executives at GCA components and partner organizations, so that well-coordinated, rapid response communications are always possible.
  • Working especially closely with the Global Commons Alliance Earth HQ (our media arm) Executive Director and team.
  • Working closely with GCA’s Development Director on fundraising documents and other donor communications to strengthen our financial position.
  • Overseeing all digital communications with the Digital Content Manager and ensuring they are up to date, relevant and engaging for all audiences.

Requirements:

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in strategic communications, advocacy and/or PR, and at least 5 years of experience successfully developing and executing a communications strategy for a globally networked organization.
  • Experience in successfully developing, supporting and executing communications campaigns involving multiple partners across NGO’s, companies and governments.
  • Experience working with scientists (and science communications), and familiarity with related topics including economic and policy transformation.
  • Ability to summarize and synthesize complex, often scientific reports, findings and information to make them accessible to a diverse audience in both written and visual form.
  • Experience using WordPress, Canva, G-Suite and Microsoft applications.
  • Proven leadership with seasoned judgment, the ability to make decisions, justify recommendations and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
  • Comfortable advising and engaging with subject matter experts and senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, motivate, and lead colleagues.
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively with a small team; comfort with adapting to changing situations, and experience working in different regions of the world.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in another language (or more) is a big advantage.

  • Location: Remote
  • Salary: $120K – $160K USD. Geographic differential will be applied based on location. Candidates must have the right to work in the country from which they are applying.
