This week, we launched the first in a new series of explainer videos: a clear and compelling introduction to the global commons and why they matter now more than ever.

This is another busy month for international climate action, with major summits including the UNFCCC Climate Week 3 in the Republic of Korea, and the First Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Everything feels big at the moment, doesn’t it? With each bi-weekly newsletter we write, the world feels ever more fractured.

As geopolitical tensions continue to ripple through global markets, the fragility of our fossil fuel-dependent world becomes increasingly apparent.

At last week’s Munich Security Conference California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the urgency to collaborate at the sub-national level in the face of increasingly unstable US leadership, through “partnerships that make California stronger, Americans safer, and our planet healthier.” He said: “Growth and security depend on democratic values, credibility, and climate action.”

As world leaders gather at the World Economic Forum in Davos, scientists, economists and business executives have signed an open letter calling for a shared prosperity path to replace the outdated model of fossil-fuelled growth, which is accelerating inequality, geopolitical instability, and climate and ecological collapse.
