Jane Madgwick Leaves GCA

Jane Madgwick has left her position as Executive Director of the Global Commons Alliance. The Chair of the Steering Committee, Margarita Astralaga, has noted Jane’s significant contributions to the Alliance during her tenure, including setting strategic direction and expanding the partnerships and profile of the Alliance.

The Alliance thanks Jane among many other things for organizing the conjunction with the Villars Institute and the recent very successful Villars Summit workshop in March 2025. Jane is a person with great expertise and dedication and the Alliance wishes her every success in the future.

As the Earth Commission has so clearly spelled out, the world stands on a precipice of ecological and climate disaster. Systems Change Lab is providing a road map for the systems shifts which can pull us back from the brink and move us towards a world in which people and planet can thrive. Initiatives from Science Based Targets Network and Accountability Accelerator are ratcheting up corporate commitments to nature, and Earth HQ is building public support for systems change which protects the global commons. At the same time global economic systems, institutions and norms are being challenged like never before.

The Alliance has always been about convening and enabling organizations and institutions to play their part in delivering systems change for the global commons, and so over the coming months we will be reviewing the best means for us to work across our network to deliver on our essential mission.

As we undertake this transition Sebastian Schienle is stepping into the role of Director of Partnerships and Programmes, and Will Tucker will be taking on the role of Director of Communications and Resource Mobilisation.

The Alliance enters this new phase confident that the GCA will grow and catalyze ever more impact to protect the global commons. We look forward to working with you in that effort!
