We must act together

Dear friend of the Global Commons Alliance, dear Planetary Steward,

As the impacts of a rapidly changing climate and biodiversity loss accelerate around us all, citizens, cities and companies are realizing that to act effectively, we must act together. This means breaking down barriers and silos between sectors. It means engaging with regulators and policymakers, to translate science into actions and transition pathways toward a safe and just future.

Next week’s release of the Earth Commission’s new flagship paper on the Safe and Just Boundaries is an important marker on that pathway. Due to be published in the Lancet Planetary Health Journal on September 11, it provides new guidance for society’s necessary course correction, with a strong focus on justice across generations and species. The paper details where on the planet the Safe and Just Boundaries are breached, and what this means for people who are exposed to the impacts.

This Friday we are excited to release the second set of data from our survey with Earth4All and IPSOS Mori about how G20 citizens feel about the state of global commons and planetary stewardship. Please keep your eyes on all our social channels from September 6, when we’ll begin sharing the findings from this critical research.

The Global Commons Alliance and many of our partners will be in New York for Climate Week NYC and the UN Summit of the Future, from 20-29 September 2024. In New York, SBTN will publish outcomes from the first companies piloting science-based targets for nature, validating that companies now have a credible pathway to take ambitious action for nature. Systems Change Lab will host a session on driving food systems transformation, teasing the food system that will launch on the data platform later in the year. From the launch of the Planetary Health Check to a high-level roundtable on human equity and wellbeing, view a list of events we are hosting and taking part in on our website, which is being updated regularly.

Alongside the many GCA partners present in New York, the events we are engaged with at Climate Week NYC and the UN Summit For the Future are all designed to contribute to the collective system shift we urgently need. We hope to see you there.

With all my best wishes,

Jane
