Real economy solutions

Dear Planetary Steward, dear friend of the Global Commons Alliance,

This week the newly revamped Climate Weeks kick off, with dialogues focused on ambition and implementation. The new biannual platform aims to accelerate urgently needed coordinated solutions in the lead up to COP30, against the politically and economically challenging environment we now find ourselves in. Opening the first Climate Week in Panama City yesterday, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary, UN Climate Change stressed how strong national climate plans can preserve our economies from falling into further chaos: “Clear and strong climate policies are an antidote to economic uncertainty. Climate policies can help get trade flowing and economies growing. And prevent wildly destructive climate impacts. [..] This new generation of climate plans are really about growth.” He also called for international cooperation to achieve collective progress. “We simply cannot afford a two-speed transition, where some countries race ahead with clean energy and climate resilience and leave others behind. Because a supply chain is only as strong as its most fragile link.”

This power of the collective is true across all systems on the planet, from economics and industry to food and agriculture. New research published last week from Systems Change Lab, a component of the GCA, shows that to transform the global food system by 2050 to equitably and nutritiously feed 10 billion people with fewer GHG emissions and biodiversity losses, we will need to improve food production, reduce food waste, and shift diets around the world. Explore the new food system data.

As we recently outlined, we see the disruption in politics and economics as an opportunity to inspire and generate a future in which humanity and nature can thrive. If you would like to join us in our efforts, please connect with us – especially if you’re attending the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, or London Climate Action Week this June, where representatives from the GCA, Earth Commission, the Science Based Targets Network and Accountability Accelerator will be attending various events. We look forward to collaborating with you for a Safe and Just future that provides real economy solutions for all.

With all our best,

Sebastian Schienle, Director of Partnerships and Programs, and Will Tucker, Director of Communications and Resource Mobilization
