Dear friend of the Global Commons Alliance, dear Planetary Steward,

It is here. Global Common Alliance’s Earth Commission has just published its latest research in the journal Lancet Planetary Health. The new science builds on the Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries released last year, to quantify in real numbers a Safe and Just space for humanity on Earth, and outline the crucial pathways to get there.

It’s a powerful call to action to the world’s governments, private sector and communities: now is the  time to collaborate to dramatically transform governance, economic systems and technologies so that the global commons—such as ecosystems, freshwater and nutrients—can be better understood and valued as underpinning the health of nature and people, and managed more equitably.

By using this new science to inform  science-based targets, cities and businesses in particular have an historic opportunity to play their role in ensuring societies thrive for generations to come, and to determine their ‘fair share’ of what living within Earth’s limits looks like.

Among the authors’ key recommendations is legislation to safeguard the global commons, something expected to be under discussion at the upcoming UN Summit of the Future, which is billed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address major gaps in global governance. Already most people agree; 72% of G20 public believe it should be a criminal offense for business or government leaders to cause damage to nature and climate, according to the IPSOS Mori survey that we released last week with Earth for All.

For more info on the Earth Commission’s science, which is extremely rich and detailed, please visit our website, and the Earth Commission’s site, where you’ll find access to all the relevant supporting information.

We look forward to exploring ways we can respond to this research, at our events in New York later this month. It is by coming together across geographies and sectors that we can accelerate the critical systems shift toward Earth’s Safe and Just space. And in this space there is room for every single one of us.

With all my best wishes,

Jane
