As 2025 has begun with devastating fires and floods around the world, we already know our way of life is putting civilization and all life on Earth at great risk. But many don’t realize a clear pathway to a Safe and Just future exists. The latest Earth Commission science shows how global biophysical boundaries must underpin political and economic decision making – and the Science Based Targets Network shows that companies and cities have a leading role to play.

Safe and Just science first took centre-stage at Davos in 2023, when the two Earth Commission Co-chairs, Johan Rockström and Joyeeta Gupta, delivered a preview of the Earth System Boundaries.

Last year at the World Economic Forum Prof. Rockström, Prof. Joyeeta Gupta, David Obura and Wendy Broadgate highlighted pathways to tackling negative tipping points and building a Safe and Just future for everyone, illustrated by science-based futurist visuals to show what our world could look like if we lived within these limits.

One of the science-based Safe and Just location visuals – see all of them here.

This year at Davos we will share how the latest science shows the path to prosperity for people and the planet but only if we can learn to live within Earth’s safe and just boundaries and ensure equitable conditions for all. It will require humanity to work together across sectors at all levels to not only survive – but thrive. In the age of AI and geopolitical instability, it will take greater collective endeavor than ever before. But if we truly work together, anything is possible.
