Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

11/02/2026

Today we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science! With attacks on climate and nature science increasing each year, in 2026 it’s more important than ever to platform the vital role of scientific research in informing our world. Join us in celebrating the inspiring women in science from around the world who we are honoured to have as members and partners of the Global Commons Alliance.

Over the past year, climate and Earth system science has come under sustained pressure. In the US, climate agencies have faced budget cuts, data deletion and harassment. Globally, these trends are echoed by the spread of climate misinformation and attempts to delay or discredit solutions like clean energy. Together, these actions erode trust in science, restrict access to vital knowledge, and threaten evidence-based decision-making at a time when it is most urgently needed.

We’re proud to work with many women in science who are collaborating to enable the safeguarding, restoration, and governance of Earth’s vital life-support systems for all people, including:

  • Margarita Astralaga, Co-chair, Global Commons Alliance
  • Wendy Broadgate, Executive Director of the Earth Commission and Future Earth interim Global Hub Director
  • Professor Gail Whiteman, Hoffmann Impact Professor for Accelerating Action on Nature & Climate at the University of Exeter Business School, Founder and Executive Director of Arctic Basecamp, and Founding Director of Climate Basecamp
  • Jean Oelwang, Founding CEO and President, Virgin Unite
  • Naoko Ishii, Director, Center for Global Commons
  • Sweta Chakraborty, CEO North-America, We Don’t Have Time
  • Erin Billman, Chief Executive Officer, Science Based Targets Network
  • Elise Buckle, Founder and CEO of Climate Bridges
  • Maja Groff, Convenor and Executive Director, Climate Governance Commission
  • Rachel Jetel, Co-Director, Systems Change Lab
  • Natasha Matic, Executive Director, Accountability Accelerator
  • Prof. Fatima Denton, Co-chair of the Earth Commission and Director of the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), and she works alongside Earth Commissioners around the world including:
  • Xuemei Bai, Distinguished Professor, Australian National University
  • Joyeeta Gupta, Professor, University of Amsterdam
