Another world is possible
15/01/2026
Dear Planetary Steward,
The year has begun with a sobering mix of urgency and disappointment. Environmental devastation including fatal flash floods in Indonesia and bush fires in Australia puts the global response to the climate and nature crisis under huge pressure. At the same time the US has withdrawn from critical international treaties and institutions including the UNFCCC, IPCC and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and made aggressive moves for minerals and oil in Venezuela as well as indicating its intention to expand extraction elsewhere. This pattern of exploitation is already impacting communities such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where China’s mining operations have caused severe local harm.
But we must remember that another world is still possible. While some countries cling to an outdated vision of the global economy, many are also moving toward one that protects profits AND protects people and the planet we all depend on. Driven by ambitious targets, China met 84% of its electricity demand growth in 2024 with wind and solar, and its clean energy leadership is reshaping the global energy landscape. The EU met half of its electricity needs with renewables by the end of 2025, and India is experiencing record clean energy investment. While the fossil fuel sector is expected to lose about 3 million jobs, under current policies, the IEA reports that the green economy could create 10 million more jobs globally by 2030.
The energy transition is part of a wider shift that many societies want. People across borders and the political spectrum want fundamental economic systems change for a better quality of life. That is why we support Reclaim the Economy Week – co-convened by Wellbeing Economy Alliance – WEAll and Earth4All – uplifting Indigenous economics, rights-based approaches and safer, fairer systems for our societies. This approach is outlined as critical in the Earth Commission’s Safe and Just science, which demonstrates that justice is a prerequisite for the safety of both the planet and its people.
This vision must be shared next week by world leaders gathering at the World Economic Forum in Davos – alongside Alliance members and partners – at this decisive moment in history for humanity’s future. From voters, consumers and activists to workers and political leaders, the choices we all make now will determine whether we move deeper into crisis – or into another world in which we all thrive.
With all our best, Sebastian Schienle, Co-Director (Partnerships and Programs) Will Tucker, Co-Director (Communications and Resource Mobilization)
