Dear Planetary Steward,
Everything on Earth is connected. The forests. The ice caps. The rain that falls on your city. When one system shifts, others follow. Our new video maps these interconnections – and why safeguarding them matters for every species and generation to come. In the video, we explain that for thousands of years, Earth’s interconnected systems gave us the conditions for human civilizations and ecosystems to flourish. But while that balance is now under pressure with dangerous impacts rippling across the planet, the reverse is also true. Protecting and restoring the global commons can also trigger positive waves across the whole Earth system. Demystifying these interconnected systems is essential for the decisions we make today. Featuring footage from Open Planet and made with members and partners, please watch and share this video with your networks, to help make planetary stewardship accessible and compelling to all.
We will be bringing this understanding of Earth systems into live discussion at London Climate Action Week later this month. On June 23, we co-host ‘Bigger Than [Silo] Strategy: Practical tools and strategies to bust silos and unlock systems approaches’ with Sharing Strategies, to look holistically across climate, environment, social and health agendas to ensure our wider ecosystem is more powerful than the sum of its parts.
The following day, on June 24, we host ‘A World Worth Choosing – Building a Holistic Vision for a Safe and Just Future’, bringing together panelists from the Centre for Global Commons, Climate Spring, the Earth Commission, Earth4All, the Planetary Guardians, and Systemiq Ltd., to explore what a genuinely just world on a safe planet looks like — and why it’s the most compelling vision for prosperity, resilience, and belonging in the 21st century. The urgency for such collaborative solutions continues to accelerate. There’s now an 80% chance of an El Niño event hitting between June and August this year. As UN Secretary-General Guterres warns: “El Niño conditions will pour fuel on the fire of a warming world”, calling on leaders to respond by ending the world’s addiction to fossil fuels and shifting to a safe and just future. These are exactly the conversations we need to be having at global summits like London Climate Action Week. See a growing list of events that our members, partners and allies are taking part in. If you will be in London, please do get in touch.
With all my best,
Sebastian Schienle, Co-Director (Partnerships and Programs)
