Why single actors fail (and how ecosystems win)

Dear Planetary Steward,

At the heart of effective systems change lies a simple but powerful idea: that organizations working together, connected by a shared purpose, can achieve far more than any single actor working alone. In a new blog, I explore this through the lens of ecosystem building — examining how organizations can effectively fit into a broader ecosystem to drive systems change for a safe and just future. I offer a simple three-part framework for how organizations can position themselves within an ecosystem: scaling and sustaining proven models, innovating to test what works and how to scale it, and providing infrastructure — the connective tissue that enables organizations to be more than the sum of their parts. The GCA is part of that infrastructure, and it’s why we focus our energy on facilitating strategic dialogue, developing community tools, and accelerating collaboration. I’d love to hear your thoughts on both what resonates and what’s missing from this approach.

The urgency of this work is underscored by a growing body of evidence linking planetary and human health this week. As you can explore below, recent signals from the World Health OrganisationEarth4All, and the Planetary Health Alliance all point in the same direction: the climate and health crises are not separate challenges but deeply intertwined ones. Whether through the spread of climate-sensitive diseases, the health impacts of air pollution and extreme heat, or the systemic risks posed by ecological breakdown, the evidence is increasingly clear: you cannot protect people’s wellbeing without protecting the interconnected systems that sustain life on Earth. This requires exactly the kind of joined-up, ecosystem-wide thinking that drives the work of the Alliance.

On that note, I’m delighted to share that the Global Commons Alliance Secretariat will be at London Climate Action Week, a key gathering in the international climate calendar. Details on our participation and events will be added to this events page over the coming weeks.

As always, we are grateful to be part of this community. The global commons have the potential to grow stronger every time we show up, together.

With all my best,

Will Tucker, Co Director (Communications and Resource Mobilization)
