Dear Planetary Steward,
This Earth Day, we’re asking a question that sounds obvious, but isn’t: do you know what the global commons are? Despite these interconnected systems sustaining every aspect of life on Earth, this vital concept has remained surprisingly niche. That’s why this week we launched the first in a new series of explainer videos: a clear, accessible look at what the global commons are and why they matter. From rainforests regulating our climate to freshwater systems nourishing communities and ecosystems, understanding our shared planet is essential to protecting our future. Featuring beautiful footage from Open Planet, the new series — made with our members and partners — is designed to demystify the science, systems change, and frameworks which lie at the core of our mission. Together we can make planetary stewardship accessible and compelling to all. View and share the video on YouTube or LinkedIn, and watch out for more in the coming weeks.

Starting today, we’ll be following the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands. The event is a crucial stepping stone toward COP31 in November, bringing together countries, subnational governments, and stakeholders committed to a just, orderly, and equitable transition in line with the best available science. We Don’t Have Time is the Official Global Media Partner, providing on-the-ground coverage of high-level meetings, open dialogues and more. Don’t forget to register to watch here.
Meanwhile COP31 President-Designate, Murat Kurum, issued his first official letter, placing implementation at the heart of Türkiye’s climate agenda and calling on civil society, the private sector, finance, academia, local governments, and young people to accelerate action together. Implementation is also a key focus of this week’s UNFCCC Climate Week 3 in Yeosu, South Korea, which is focused on accelerating on-the-ground climate solutions, and workshops designed to turn pledges into projects through collaboration.
The choices made now will shape our shared inheritance for generations. As we celebrate Earth Day this week, we ask you: how can we better collaborate across sectors to steward, restore, and govern the global commons? Get in touch to let us know.
With all our best, Will Tucker, Co-Director (Communications and Resource Mobilization) Sebastian Schienle, Co-Director (Partnerships and Programs)
