Why new organizations are joining the Global Commons Alliance

09/12/2025

Find out why new organizations are joining the Global Commons Alliance as members, explore opportunities for collaboration, and learn how your organization can join the Alliance.

Since we opened applications last month, we’re pleased to share that the Alliance has evolved from its original five members to 19 organizations spanning diverse sectors, areas of expertise and geographic footprints. Many more are either discussing or signing-off on their intention to join now and in 2026.

But this momentum to join the Alliance did not come overnight. For the six years leading up to this moment, the Global Commons Alliance connected a wide range of partners and was the umbrella for the Earth Commission, Science Based Targets Network, Earth HQ, Systems Change Lab and Accountability Accelerator – all of which are now well established and playing critical roles seeking to protect and restore our global commons.

Building on these achievements, in 2025 and beyond, our new membership structure is bringing together even more actors from across civil society, philanthropy, science and business networks to safeguard and restore Earth life-support systems, equitably, now.

Benefits of membership

But how do members benefit from joining the Global Commons Alliance? Facilitated and convened by our Secretariat – and guided by Earth system and solutions science – the Alliance is working to deliver systemic transformations across three areas: culture, governance and the economy. Over the last few months the Alliance has been trialling new approaches that members can benefit from, to accelerate their impact toward this work:

  • ‘GCA Dialogues’ with senior leaders from across the membership and wider ecosystem, which are revealing opportunities for strategic engagement and systems analysis beyond the silos which organizations often operate within.
  • Learning and insight exchange among members and prospective members, which are showing the value of learning across boundaries of geography, sector and function.
  • An emerging collection of member-led joint initiatives to progress systems changes toward a just world on a safe planet, supported by the Secretariat.

We strengthen one another

Jessica Kronstadt, Program Director, Planetary Health Alliance, explains how collaborating as a member drives our common purpose: “The Planetary Health Alliance is proud to join the Global Commons Alliance in our shared commitment to a just world on a safe, thriving planet.

“Together, we unite diverse scientific, policy, and community voices to illuminate the deep connections between human well-being and the health of Earth’s life-support systems. Our alliances strengthen one another’s missions and help build a powerful, shared movement to secure a healthier planet for all.”

We will share more information about these collaborative initiatives, shared insights and workshops soon. In the meantime, you can find out more about joining the Alliance, or contact us to speak to our Co-Directors Sebastian Schienle and Will Tucker about how you can support or be part of the Alliance.
