Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time — and we are at a pivotal moment. If we do not urgently change course, we risk missing our chance to avoid runaway climate change, with disastrous consequences for people and all the natural systems that sustain us.
Business can set science-based targets aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. There is evidence that companies with SBTs for climate will be best-placed to thrive as the global economy transitions to a net-zero future.
Cities must ensure they are on a pathway towards 1.5°C to ensure they become resilient, healthy and prosperous places to live and work. Science-based targets for cities is a new collaboration by CDP, C40, ICLEI, WRI, and WWF, supported through the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN). The partners have come together to provide a framework for cities that want to play their part in reducing their emissions in line with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5C. The framework will guide cities in choosing and applying a methodology that is most suitable for achieving their emissions reduction goals and in joining Race to Zero ahead of COP26.
